The Vienna Secession was formed by a group of Austrian artists who broke away from the Association of Austrian Artists in 1897. This group consisted of artists, sculptors, and architects who strove to explore the possibilities of art outside the confines of the academic curriculum, create a style that owed nothing to historical influence, and capture the zeitgiest of turn-of-the-century Vienna. The Vienna Secessionist showcased much of their work in a magazine that they produced called
Var Sacrum. The Vienna Secession was known in other languages and cultures as Art Nouveua in France; Jugendstil in Germany; Modern in Russia; and Stile Liberty in Italy. The movement was inspired by natural forms and structures, and curved lines.
